Nutritional Therapy has been gaining traction as people seek ways to address their health issues holistically. But what exactly is Nutritional Therapy, and how does it work? This approach goes beyond simply eating healthily; it’s about understanding your body’s unique needs and using food as your ally in managing and preventing health issues.
In this post, we’ll dive into what Nutritional Therapy really entails, who can benefit from it, and why it’s more than just another health trend
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional Therapy is a holistic, evidence-based approach to health that focuses on how diet and lifestyle can influence wellness. It’s about recognising that everyone’s nutritional needs are different and that food and nutrition can support the body in preventing and managing various health issues. Unlike conventional medicine, which often addresses symptoms directly, Nutritional Therapy seeks to uncover and tackle the underlying causes of health problems.
This approach has shown success in managing conditions such as hormonal imbalances, digestive disturbances, skin issues, and even autoimmune conditions. Rather than treating food as just fuel, Nutritional Therapy encourages using food as medicine to support the body’s natural healing processes.
Why I Moved from Pharmacy to Nutritional Therapy
After working as an NHS Pharmacist for over 20 years, I saw countless instances where medications felt like they were simply "sticking plasters" for deeper health issues. While medications have their place (who hasn’t needed an antibiotic for a raging infection?), I realised that many people were missing out on addressing the real root causes of their symptoms. This realisation led me down the path to Nutritional Therapy, where I felt I could help people in a more meaningful way.
In my early thirties, I personally experienced a bereavement that led to anxiety, stress, and hormonal imbalances. This difficult time made me look for more natural, sustainable ways to support my health. I researched nutrition and lifestyle support methods and even underwent functional testing to gain insight into my body’s needs. That experience was a pivotal moment, sparking my passion for helping others on their health journeys through Nutritional Therapy.
Food as Medicine: What Nutritional Therapy Can Address
Nutritional Therapy isn’t just for those looking to lose weight or manage diabetes—it can benefit anyone dealing with chronic symptoms or looking to improve their overall wellness.
This approach can be helpful in addressing:
Hormonal Imbalances: Nutritional Therapy can help restore balance to your body by focusing on nutrient-rich foods that support hormonal function. It can also provide support for conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, perimenopause, and menopause. Additionally, it addresses men’s health concerns, including prostate issues.
Gut Health: Conditions like IBS, bloating, and digestive discomfort are often tied to dietary triggers, gut bacteria imbalances or nutrient deficiencies. Nutritional Therapy offers personalised solutions to address these concerns.
Mental Health: Nutrition plays a vital role in mental well-being. Targeted dietary changes can support brain health, reduce inflammation, and improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, or stress-related conditions.
Chronic Health Conditions: Nutritional Therapy can provide valuable support for managing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and other long-term health challenges, improving quality of life through tailored diet and lifestyle adjustments.
Autoimmune Conditions: By strengthening the immune system through targeted nutrition, we can support the body in managing autoimmune symptoms more effectively e.g. IBD such as Crohns or Ulcerative Colitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto's.
Skin Health: Nutritional Therapy can identify food and lifestyle triggers that contribute to skin issues, offering a natural route to clearer skin.
With the right nutritional support, you’re not only tackling existing symptoms—you’re also giving your body the tools it needs to prevent future health issues.
The Role of Functional Testing in Nutritional Therapy
One of the powerful tools in Nutritional Therapy is functional testing. These tests can shed light on your body’s specific needs, helping us understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Functional tests may include:
Stool Testing: This can reveal gut imbalances, like bacterial overgrowth or inflammation, which may be affecting digestion and overall health. It can also highlight any gut health issues such as intestinal permeability - otherwise known as 'leaky gut'.
Hormone Metabolism Tests: These tests assess how hormones are being processed in your body, offering insight into issues like stress and reproductive health e.g. oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol levels.
Nutrient Deficiency Testing: Low levels of essential nutrients can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms. Testing for deficiencies can help target exactly where your body needs support.
Food Intolerance Testing: Identify specific foods that may be triggering symptoms such as digestive issues, bloating, skin issues, or fatigue. This targeted insight allows for personalised dietary adjustments to improve overall well-being.
With these insights, I work with clients to interpret results and build a tailored plan that addresses the root causes of their symptoms, promoting meaningful and sustainable health changes.
What to Expect When Working with Me as Your Nutritional Therapist
Working with me as your Nutritional Therapist is a personalised journey. No two bodies are the same, so neither are the plans I create for my clients. Here’s how we typically approach it:

Functional Testing: Based on your symptoms, I may recommend specific functional tests to provide a clearer picture of what’s happening internally.
Supplement Recommendations & Review: Based on your individual health needs, I may recommend specific supplements to support your wellness journey. I take into account any supplements or medications you may already be taking, ensuring there are no conflicts or interactions between them.
Personalised Nutrition and Lifestyle Plan: You’ll receive a personalised nutrition plan that focuses on nourishing your body with the right foods to help balance your hormones, improve gut health, manage stress, and more. But it’s not just about food—it’s also about making sustainable lifestyle changes. This might include adjustments to your sleep, exercise, stress management, and daily routines, all designed to support your overall well-being and make healthy habits a natural part of your life.
